Rowney Warren and the other local wooded areas come under the umbrella of Ampthill Forest. It is the place to escape to and breath the fresh air. Walking for pleasure, walking your dog and a favourite for local fitness for cycling and running.
On the southern Sandy Lane side where the main car park is you are safe to walk with children, dogs and enjoy the picnic bench facilities there. Please remember to pick up any litter or dog mess. Lets keep the warren as clean and as clear as possible. If the weather is damp don't forget more sturdy walking boots or wellies to change in to. There are some steep slopes in places and it as well to be prepared.
The ground is mainly soft underfoot and very forgiving. The ground gives for you on the pathway in all weathers and seasons, just be careful if very wet and boggy, icey or after a hot dry spell. The tree roots due pertrude in places
Beware of cyclists on the north side of Sandy Lane. There is plenty of space still for dog walkers, ramblers and runners too but they have access. There are various routes for mountain bikes and offroad cyclists, gentle runs and ones for the more expert handler. Start off easy and work your way up if you're not sure
The is wildlife in the warren, if well hidden. Deer roam around in the ferns, there are many of our common bird species there including a few more obscure. You will encounter the grey squirrel but if you are lucky you might see one or two black ones.
Parking is plentiful on Sandy Lane and there are further parking places at the north end on Standalone Warren (heading away from the A600 towards Haynes). It is only a 5-10 minute drive from the centre of Shefford, a must see while visiting.
